Most capital formation efforts fail at the same point: not the pitch, but the targeting. Trillions sit across pensions, endowments, foundations, sovereign wealth funds, insurance general accounts, family offices, and the consultants and OCIOs who gate-keep access. The real work is identifying who inside each institution owns the allocation decision, what their mandate actually permits, and whether a warm path to that conversation exists.
We built this directory to compress that research. It covers 2083+ institutional investors across 56 categories, each profiled with AUM, investment focus, headquarters, and descriptions drawn from the institution's own filings and disclosures. CalPERS and GPIF sit alongside Harvard Management Company and UTIMCO. Norway's $2.1 trillion GPFG and Abu Dhabi's ADIA share space with Lilly Endowment and Gates. The intermediary layer is here too: the OCIOs controlling discretionary capital, the consultants writing recommendation letters, the fund of funds aggregating LP tickets.
Family offices span 37 markets, from the established centers in New York and London to the fast-growing hubs in Riyadh, Hong Kong, and Munich. Across every segment, alternatives allocations have climbed from roughly 5% of portfolios in 2000 to north of 30% today. The largest endowments and sovereign funds now commit 50-75% to PE, venture, real assets, and hedge funds. If you are raising a fund or originating deals, this is the map.
Sourcing & Methodology
Where a firm reports publicly, via an SEC Form ADV, an IRS Form 990, or a public annual report, its figure is grounded in that filing, linked to the source, and labeled with the filing date. Many institutions, and single- and multi-family offices in particular, are exempt from public adviser reporting; their figures are shown as firm-disclosed and labeled as such, not presented as independently verified. Every figure on this directory is either traceable to a primary source or explicitly marked firm-disclosed.
