Market maps and thesis reports

We map your industry, test your plan, and hand you a short list of potential targets.

Any industry, any country. For private equity sponsors, corporate development teams, fund managers, companies and family offices.

How we map an industry

How a market map runs, left to rightOne line joins six steps: your plan, our data, the industry mapped, where to look, the case against, and the verdict with potential targets. The line into the verdict is drawn in oxblood.
  1. Your plan

A thesis to test, an industry to enter, or a company to grow by buying others.

  2. Our data

Our own data, then government registers, licenses and regulator filings.

  3. The industry, mapped

We split the industry into segments and find every owner.

  4. Where to look

We pick the best segments and the companies that fit.

  5. The case against

We look hard for reasons your plan could fail.

  6. Verdict and potential targets

Whether your plan holds up, and who to approach.

What a market map gives you

Verdict first

Our answer and why, up front.

The industry map

Every company in your sector, who owns it, and which are still independent.

The case against

What most people miss, and what could sink your plan.

Companies to approach

A short list of companies that fit your criteria.

Ways into the industry

Whether to go in, where, and how to start.

Who is buying

Groups buying up your sector, and what they bought.

Three industries we mapped

Firms in one sector: top targets, a watch list and the rest, and the groups buying the sector upA field of small dots, one for every firm mapped. A few at the top are filled in as top targets, a band of ringed dots is the watch list, and the rest are quiet, each ruled out for a stated reason. Below, a row of small squares joined by one line stands for the groups buying the sector up.

Buyers

In services that help drug makers sell, we mapped 817 firms and 149 acquisitions by 12 groups buying them up, ranked the 32 best targets, with a reason for each one ruled out.

Not the owner

Grid battery storage, by whether the owner decides when it runsOne bar for all grid battery storage. About half of its length is filled, the share where the owner does not decide when it runs; most often a trading arm in the owner's own group does.

The owner

In one US power grid, the owner does not decide when 51% of battery storage runs. Most often a trading arm in its own group does, so the person to call is often not the owner.

The government's register, the fastener and hardware firms on it, and the distributors among themSquares drawn to scale by area: a large open square for every business on the register, a tiny square in its corner for the fastener and hardware firms, and a smaller filled square inside that for the distributors. Two lines lead from the tiny square to the same square drawn large, where the filled share for the distributors can be seen.

Fasteners

Distributors

In fastener distribution, we read all 893,256 businesses registered to sell to the US government: 7,411 for fasteners and hardware, 3,212 of those as distributors.
